What is COQ10?
CoenzymeQ10, known as COQ10, is a compound used by the body to generate energy for your cells. It’s produced naturally by the body, and levels of COQ10 lower as you age. COQ10 plays a key role in producing adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and it’s also an antioxidant that fights free radicals in the body. The highest concentrations of COQ10 are found in the heart, kidneys, lungs and liver, due to their high energy demands. Some chronic illnesses have been linked to a low level of COQ10(1).
What are the benefits of COQ10?
In one study, use of COQ10 was linked to improving the condition of those with heart failure (2). COQ10 works to improve energy production, and fight oxidative damage and improve heart function, which aids the treatment of heart failure.
Oxidative stress affects muscle function, COQ10 decreases oxidative stress, and aids ATP production, leading to it being excellent for improving exercise performance.
Mitochondria generate energy for brain cells. As you age, Mitochondria function decreases. The brain is vulnerable to oxidative damage, which affects cognitive function. COQ10 may be able to fight harmful compounds and improve overall brain health.
COQ10 has also been shown to combat migraines and alleviate headaches, again, by reducing oxidative stress.
Are there any side effects to COQ10?
Like all supplements, you should consult your doctor if you have any concerns about whether you need them or not, or if you are worried about interactions with medicines you may be taking. Some recommend that COQ10 is taken during the day, as it can keep you awake if taken to late at night. It’s fat soluble, meaning you should take it with food if possible, taking it without food may cause stomach upset. If you do experience any adverse effects, cease use of COQ10 and consult your doctor.
