What are omega-3 fats?
Omega-3 fats are a family of essential fatty acids. They play in important role in your body and provide a number of health benefits. Your body can’t produce fatty acids, and so it needs to get them via your diet. The three most important fatty acids are ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid). ALA being found in plants, while DHA and EPA are found in animal foods and algae. An easy way to get omega-3 in your diet is to eat fish at least twice a week.
How much omega-3 should I take daily?
There are no official guidelines as of yet, however many health professionals would advise a dose over and above 250mg a day for an adult, and can be as much as 3000mg a day, though there is no upper limit. Omega Pro+ provides 370mg per capsule and a serving size of 6 capsules a day. This leaves you with 2220mg of omega-3s daily, which is more than enough to feel the benefits.
What to look for in omega-3 supplements?
Overly processed omega-3 supplements can be less effective than those that have been processed in a lab or created synthetically. Supplement Needs Omega Pro+ is derived from fish oil, so you can be assured it’s of the highest possible quality. Look out for a supplement that lists DHA, EPA and DPA on the label (Omega Pro + does), as EPA and DHA are the two main fatty acids you need.
What if I don’t like or eat fish?
If you’re not a fan of fish, you can get omega-3 in your diet by using a supplement. Soft gels are tasteless and don’t start to dissolve until they reach your small intestine. In the case of Omega Pro+, the capsules are tutti fruity flavoured, so if you don’t like the taste of normal soft gel capsules, then these are exactly what you need. Most health professionals recommend supplementing with an omega-3 supplement. If you don’t eat fish, you’ll get very little omega-3 in your diet and can miss out on some of the health benefits it provides.
